A male United Kingdom age 41-50, anonymous writes:

I'm suffering from a very bad confidence problem, i.e the lack of. In short loads of things have happened to me over the past decade that all but shattered my nerves. It's had an effect on everything but here and now it's badly affecting my work. I work in a small office and in particular I cant bring myself to use the phone at times. It's got to the point that I feel sick and has even caused me chest pains in the last two years (doctor signed me off for a week for that and the pains dissapeared but come back every now and again).

I've got some small amount of confidence back from the early days of being bullied at school as an example but I still go to work with my heart pumpping.

I dont suppose anyone can suggest anything to help?

cd206 agony auntSounds a lot like you're having panic attacks when you have to use the phone. I've suffered with them myself and its taken a long time to get them under control and I still get them occassionally. Things that helped me cope were to count to ten and breathe in and out slowly before doing what frightened me and dealing with things in small chunks... one job at a time. Some counselling might help you too but try to avoid being signed off again. I know it's tempting to run away from the things that scare us but we'll never get over them unless we face them head on however much they scare us!
