A female reader, anonymous, writes (11 December 2010):

He is your husband and sex partner for crying out loud! It would be difficult telling a friend or co-worker that they smell bad, but not your husband. You are intimate with him. Just tell him flat out that you have a problem with his personal hygiene. He will have no choice but to oblige if he wants to have sex with you. Good luck!

DrPsych agony auntIf he smells because he doesn't wash, tell him to visit the shower before he visits you! If that is not the cause then it could be a host of medical or lifestyle reasons. Untreated diabetes, for example, can cause a particularly bad smell. His diet might need looking at too. Get him to a doctor and get the cause diagnosed.

Hi there

Difficult to approach someone and tell them about their personal hygiene... find out why he doesnt like using deordarants could be hes sensitive to them, you can buy ones that have less fragrance added etc.

Or how about just pouring him a romantic bath or bath/shower together.

Whichever way you approach this you need to do it sensitively no one likes to find out their body odour affects people.

Good luck :)
