I used to get charley horses, especially in the morning when I've stretched. It literally feels like you're tearing your calf muscle in half, and the pain is excruciating. I went to my doctor about it, and he said that it was all about dehydration for me. I really started cranking down the water (not sugared drinks or alcohol, which will actually leech more water out of your system. Same with caffeine, which is a diuretic), and I haven't had one in a few years.
They're awful. For about 5 minutes, you want to scream. Then you're limping around for a day or two afterwards with a poor, traumatized calf.

A lot of people recommend eating bananas for the potassium. I'm not 100% sure of that being the root cause but it always seems to help me. As someone else already stated, dehydration is usually the largest reason. I'd suggest drinking half a gatorade and drink a gallon of water per day for a few days to get fully hydrated. Also, get those legs stretched out! Drinking water and stretching will get those muscles open to blood flow and will help tremendously.

Well, since I am not a doctor, I can't answer that one definitively. However, most true charley horses are brought about by dehydration and/or a lack of nutrients.
Tell your fiance to drink a lot more water and take a daily multivitamin. If that doesn't help, I very much recommend a trip to the doctor.

It could be a blood flow issue and circulation. Exercise can help that greatly.
