A male reader, CaringGuy United Kingdom +, writes (26 January 2010):

Gently you need to find out what it is. Chances are there is one thing one her mind that is causing her to worry about a lot of things. She could be having problems at home, problems with friends, problems with school, or she could just be feeling insecure. Next time she seems down, give her a hug and ask if her if she'd like to talk about how she's feeling. If she does, just sit and listen to her, and don't suggest anything. Just listen. If she does't want to talk, just keep hugging her and tell her you're there for her.
