My college offers free IUD placement (paraguard) for students. I've been wanting an IUD for awhile now, but I'm terrified it will hurt a lot. Does anyone have any tips for when to go so it will hurt less, or how much it hurt or anything? I feel like now is a good time to get it placed but I'm so scared.

A female reader, Angzw Zimbabwe +, writes (26 January 2010):

The best time to have it put in is on the heaviest day of your period; usually the second day. This is because your cervix is slightly open. When it is going in, it feels like a slight period pain for about 10 seconds. Just breathe deeply. Its much more painful when you are not on your period and the cervix is tightly closed. I have been using them for years and had mine replaced recently. The heavy bleeding during periods is really annoying though. I'm talking changing Super tampon every 2 hours on the heavy days; when you leave the house during those 2 heaviest days you may have to wear tampon plus back up pad too. Also, you might have to consider taking iron supplements during periods because I became borderline anaemic since I rarely eat red meat. Other than that, no weight gain at all; your libido remains high. All these things are different for everyone; this is my experience.

Aunty BimBim agony auntI would imagine developments in IUDs, like other areas of health and science, have gone ahead in leaps and bounds since I had one (decades ago ...) they dont hurt, just relax as much as you can, speak to the medical staff about what sort of discomfort etc you can expect, and if, by some odd chance, there is a problem, make sure you seek immediate medical adivse
