My girlfriend has nightmares constantly, could she be repressing something, should she see a doctor or what?

Hi guys,

My girlfriend is having nightmares that are really interrupting her (our!) sleep. They seem to occur just as she's drifting off, and they vary in intensity. She'll suddenly have a start and wake up, sometimes she's tossing and turning, hyperventilating, even almost screaming in her sleep, and I have a lot of trouble waking her up, but when she does, she's often terrified and shaky, but not keen to go into much detail. She often has so many repeated episodes in one night, that she doesn't want to go to sleep. Shes worried she's going crazy or something, and I'm not quite sure what to say. A few months ago she had an issue with a friend of hers who took advantage of her and really freaked her out when he, for want of a better word 'copped a feel'. She says she feels like she's over it (she feels like she's making a deal out of nothing), like it doesn't worry her anymore, but does this prove otherwise? Could it be something like she's subconsciously bottling it up, so she really doesn't care about it anymore, but some unconscouis part of her does?

If her nightmares have started since that incidence, then there is a good chance that they are related to what happened. But if she was having these nightmares before, then it probably isn't anything to do with what happened.

It could be down to stress, or other things which might be playing on her mind, whether she is aware of those things or not.

But I definitely think it would be a good idea for her to see a doctor about this. It must be really exhausting for both of you, and I think the doctor will be able to help. If there are things bothering her which are causing the nightmares, the doctor will be able to help with those issues too.

I hope she starts to feel better soon. x
