My friend said I remind him of an actress I find ugly and it really hurt my feelings; am I overreacting?

A female Australia age , anonymous writes:

I have a relatively new friend who has always been sweet and kind towards me but said something recently that I find I am really insulted by. He commented that I reminded him of the actress Kirsty Alley. Now this may seem silly to most people, but I find her to be ugly and worse still, vulgar. This has hurt my feelings as I am concerned that he perceives me in this vein. My personality and demeanour are nothing like this woman. Are my hurt feelings my own problem and I should just suffer in silence ?

I totally agree with the anonymous female respondent to your question.

Kirsty Alley, a few years ago was to my mind one of the most gorgeous women on the planet, and I'd have crawled on hands and knees over half a mile of broken glass just for a sniff of the air in her wake!

Take it as a compliment, that's how it will have been meant.

Kirstie Alley wasn't always vulgar, nor fat. In her youth I considered her to be very beautiful and so did millions. Maybe he finds her attractive and you remind him a little of her in her more beauteous days. Stop being vain and thinking about it so much, if he's your friend and a nice guy, he probably didn't mean it to offend you.

Thanks guys ! You know you can get bent out of shape when you are emotional and not think rationally. You are saying things that just make perfect sense. I was thinking that I should mention that I really find this actress undesirable (she made some AWFUL ads for Jenny Craig in Australia) and that I was offended by the comparison. What has weirded me out though is this thought: when I look at him I see this nice guy, a little shy who is really kind and gentle to old people - nice character traits, know what I mean ? But now, when I look at him looking at me I am thinking...he sees the loud, vulgar Fat Actress ! I am 5'9" size 12...how does that compute ?
