A female reader, Ohboy United States +, writes (1 February 2007):

Ohboy agony auntYou say she's your friend in which case I imagine your concerned for your friend and your friendship. Some people that lie compulsively may be compensating for a difficult life or simply seeking attention. You may think that's a strange way to seek attention, but as long as she knows it bothers you the more she may continue.

Try to avoid making a big deal about the things your friend tells you. She may just slow down trying to impress you with words.

AskEve agony auntShe lies to be liked, to be noticed... simple as that! You haven't told me much about your friend but I bet if you went into more detail about her you'd be telling me she's from a broken home and has seen a lot of arguments and troubles in her time.

Next time she lies, point it out to her straight away, in fact every time she lies point it out to her. Tell her it's not cool and if she's not careful she's going to end up losing friends over it. Tell her "no one likes a liar" and that one day her lies are going to backfire on her.

Eve
