My flatmate's nasty when she drinks

A female Australia age 36-40, anonymous writes:

Hi,

Iam currenlty living with one female flatmate. I moved in almost a year ago and we are now like family. she is old enough to be my mother and we relate to each other more like mother and daughter than flatmates. The problem is that when she has been drinking or is a bad mood she gets emotionally abusive to me. She calls me pathetic for no reason and says she hates me. I know she doesn't think this coz she tells me how much she does love me when sober. She does everything for me and is very caring at home. The other thing she said though is that she doesn't want me to bring anyone 'home', which I told her was hypocritical coz she can. I don't want to move out as I love her very much and am generally happy at home. When I ask her why she is so horrible to me when drunk, or angry she just says ' I have to yell at someone'. What could I do or say to her? Whenever I try and approach a serious issue with her she usually gets mad or brushes me off, so how can i sort this out?

A female reader, jayne_staaa United Kingdom +, writes (20 May 2009):

if she has a mobile you could text her how u feel then she's atleast forced to read the whole text, just be quite onest and open about it or write her a letter or email anything really, you may think its the cowards way out but if shes refusing to listen to you talk about it then i think thats a good option for u. just tell her that sometimes you feel when she overdoes it with the drink she can be quite nasty and maybe if she cud just drink a bit less or something everything would be great.
