A female United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I have been working in my job for 2 and a half years, when I took on the job I was given a temporary contract, I was looking to develop my life into a career after a series of 'jobs' and I worked hard to move forward, I was taken on as a permenant member of staff within the first few months. I enjoyed it and tried to develop myself, and asked if I could complete any training to develop further, they offered me some experience of a much higher position a few times a week while carrying out my normal job in view of completing a qualification once I had enough experience

Ive been doing that experience now for a year, ive taught myself everything i know despite being told id get support and training, ive been asked more and more of all while being reminded the experience was what I asked for and is for my benefit not there's. They aren't giving me any training that will help me complete the qualification and I'm starting to get stressed, making silly mistakes and spending hours of my personal life trying to keep on top of my work. Due to finances doing the qualification like this was my only option as I cant afford to pay the normal routes.

I feel totally trapped, ive tried to discuss my issues with my boss and just got ignored. Ive even applied for jobs elsewhere.i know the qualification is my only major chance of a decent wage (at the moment I'm on minimum wage and finding it difficult) but I'm exhausted, stressed and feel like they are just taking advantage and I'm not going to get anywhere. My question is should I keep going. Or drop back to my normal job... Limiting myself to a poor wage but ensuring I don't get taken advantage of

Ciar agony aunt'Due to finances' I assume means you don't have enough money to pay for courses yourself so you're hoping your employer will foot the bill for you.

From what I read your employer offered you on the job training which is what you got. If you want to take extra courses it's up to you to pay for them. Nobody is obliged to pay for you to get ahead in life.

If you find the workload is more than you can handle then I'd definitely speak to your supervisor about that. Keep in mind though, that they might not have enough staff to accommodate you (those they have may feel the same way you do). I'm not sure what line of work you're in, but perhaps even changing your hours might help, if that's permissible.

And certainly put out feelers elsewhere. If you've gone as far as you can go with one company it might be time to find another.

A male reader, Been there Now over it United States +, writes (27 November 2015):

You are very career-minded and have approached this situation very well, having asked for additional duties and doing whatever you can to move ahead.

Without knowing your tasks, employer, nature of the business, what training is available in your workplace, and other matters, it is difficult to give you specific advice. Your employer has stepped up to some degree by giving you additional responsibility.

The best thing to do here is to have a heart-to-heart conversation with your boss although you indicate that you've tried this without success. You sound like a great employee and there must be other employers out there who would be more appreciative. After 2 1/2 years and having exhibited a desire to become a better employee, you should be making more than minimum wage. Start looking for a company that values your attributes.
