My boyfriend says I smell down there. What could be wrong?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Okay, so I'm a 16 year old girl and I've only been with one guy...and a few girls. My boyfriend hates the fact that down there isn't entirely pleasant smelling. It doesn't exactly smell fishy, but it smells, and I guess he notices it alot more than I do. I wash everyday and wipe front to back...but I need to know what else I can do to help get rid of the odor. Btw, I'm a vegetarian. Oh, and my mom refuses to take me to the doctor for anything, so I can't exactly see a doctor. She won't even take me for my periods...which for the past 7 months have been extrememly painful and lasting on average 3 weeks..and then coming back two weeks later! grr.

But anyway, please help me out if you can! I really don't want my area to offend!

calamitysil agony auntIt is normal for vaginal secretions to have a certain odour, but it's certainly not offensive provided you don't have thrush and you keep yourself clean. The scent and consistency changes all the time in a woman's body depending on time of month, ovulation etc. It should not smell fishy though! If your period is 3 weeks long, it's probably the metallic smell which is putting your boyfriend off. 3 weeks is not normal, so you need to see your doctor as you're at risk of anaemia especially as you're vegetarian! You're 16, old enough to see a doctor without your mother's consent(well here in the UK anyway, don't know US law).Your doctor is not allowed to share your medical details with your mother unless you give permission.

Goodness girl if you think you are old enough to have been with a guy...and a few girls..you are old enough to visit a doctor on your own!!Girls of your age have notorious periods..from one to the next they can be different..longer shorter heavier lighter but having one last for three weeks could be a sign that somethings not quite right..make the appoitment and visit your doctor you can always ask to see a female if you prefer.

in the meantime just bath in warm water and dont use anything perfumed or coloured.Your vagina is perfectly capable of keeping itself clean just wash the surrounding area.Do you use protection? How long have you known him? has he had previous partners? You may even of picked up an infection from your boyfriend!!Its possible!!

its your body, its your health, take care of it.

A reader, anonymous, writes (21 November 2007):

Take care about washing too frequently or too harshly, as that can create problems when there are not. Maybe there's an infection and maybe in the fortunate case you're scared for nothing and it's merely temporary. You should ask your doctor honey. Good health!
