Do you have any idea why he left? Maybe he kept the key because he's still got things round your place so even if you're out he can still come in and get them. I don't know about you, but this would make me extremely uncomfortable!
Have you asked for the key back? What did he say? If he refuses to give back the key, I'd see about getting the locks changed, for your own safety, or even moving somewhere else.

Maybe he doesn't trust you not to turn all the taps on and leave town?
In any case, tell him that as a woman you have far more to worry about than he does and change the locks.
Why risk him being a weirdo about things?

Thats weird. Maybe he wants to keep the key incase something goes wrong with where he is currently living, and since his name is on the lease, he knows he can always return to where you live.
