Sure, go ahead, give him a chance. You already say that he's a friend, so you'll already know whether you like him. Why not go out with him and see how that feels? Remember, he's not asking you to spend the rest of your lives together on a desert island; he just wants to spend an afternoon or an evening together to get to know you a little better... which is really quite flattering.A year difference isn't really very much, as long as you have interests in common and something to talk about and as long as you can depend on him to treat you respectfully.
