A female United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

this is going to sound rediculous and i feel a bit silly to be honest but it has become a huge issue for me at work.

im a nurse and i work nights shifts alone on my floor in a small home setting unit.

There is always someone else there but they are on a different floor and you only see them if its an emergency.

I have been on nights for about a year now and its never bothered me until last month. i was walking down the kitchen when i saw a ghost pass through the joining wall between the kitchen and hall.

now i know what i saw, whether it was my imagination due to tiredness or real i dont know, but ever since i have been terrified.

when i asked my boss if i could return to days she laughed and told me i was very silly! i dont like being belittled like that i really am upset! i now hate working nights and she seems to have given me more, im sure that im being mocked, what should i do, if anything?

oldbag agony auntHi

Thing is when working in that environment at night, alone, its a bit spooky anyway and come 3 or 4 in the morning your body is very tired. It probably was imagination.

HOWEVER, it scared you and your boss should have been sympathetic to say the least. She is just making you feel worse though by not taking you seriously, if you are genuinely spooked and she won't or can't move you onto day shift, then look for another job. Its the only answer.

Anastasia agony auntHi,

I don't think you are being ridiculous. Maybe you were tired or maybe you did see something. I agree with you that no one should make you feel belittled about something like that. The fear that you feel now is very real as a result of what you saw. It was very insensitive and unprofessional to not take your concerns seriously.

I am confused though, did you ask to be permanently on nights? Cause it seems a bit unfair that someone should be working nights all the time...that is unless you specificially requested it. I've worked shifts before and to be constantly on nights destroys your natural sleeping patterns and all that wonderful stuff. If you feel you are being victimised, made fun of or persecuted...I suggest you go to your HR Department with your concerns. It's the only way...professional wise...that I see you addressing how you feel in your workplace as well as ensuring that you are treated fairly with your shifts.

As for your "Casper"...I am not sure what your religious beliefs are. But whenever I feel uncomfortable, or I've seen something, feel a cold breeze on a hot day pass by..anything supernatural, I say a prayer. I ask the Divine ( whoever he/she is to you ) for protection and to calm my fears. I am Catholic, so I usually say Psalm 91 daily, it's protection psalm for all sorts of fears. You can also say Psalm 23. Saying the Rosary also helps..I walk around with mine all the time. But that's my belief and it gives me a sense of protection and comfort.

Your fears are not ridiculous or silly. So don't ever feel that way. There are spirits roaming the earth everyday of our lives. If you saw a ghost or spirit...cool. He really wasn't bothered by you, so try not to be bothered by him/her. He's just not fully crossed over yet I guess.

I really hoped I've made you feel even a little better. Try not to pay any mind to your boss anyway..."Casper" is probably looking to spook her cause she's so mean.
