My beloved dog died recently

Question - (6 June 2022) 2 Answers - (Newest, 8 June 2022)
A male United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

My Red British Fox Lab (aka my dog) died last Saturday at 13 years old after a short illness (three weeks). Her name was Rouge.

When my previous dogs died, I knew it was coming for months so when they did die, I was almost relief that it was over. With Rouge, she had a type of stroke. She would get better, than worse, than better, than in the last 48 years, she went downhill fast where she died peacefully in her sleep (I was going to take her to the vet clinic to be put down if she made it thru the night). My previous dogs, I knew it was coming but I feel like this death is hitting me harder than the others since I did not know it was coming.

Any advice on how to help me grief over the death of a pet dog?

kenny agony auntUnfortunately this is all part and parcel of having pets, its so difficult when we lose them.

Being a dog lover myself I know how attached we become to them and how painful it is when we don't have them anymore.

You gave her the best life that you possible could, and i'm sure if she is looking down on you she is really appreciative of this.

All I can say is time is the healer of all things, and things will get easier.

Like anonymous said, when you feel ready go and adopt another gentle soul and give them a home.

I am so sorry for your loss.

There are no shortcuts when it comes to grief. We have to go right through it.

Try to think about how you did eveything in your power to make Rouge's life great. How much she felt loved and how much you took care of her. Who could ask for more? There's also one other thing. When our loved one dies suddenly (like stroke), we could take comfort that they didn't suffer for long.

Unfortnately, compared to human animals, dogs have a much shorter life span.

When you feel ready, adopt another gentle soul. Giving them home, love and care is the best thing you can do to go throught this.
