i agree with DrPsych, i started smoking when i was 11, this was before warnings where printed on packets or anything, and i was relativly clueless to the dangers, i myself have looked at pictures and believe me at times ive wanted to throw my packet in the bin, get it early before he gets to involved in it, also tell him about the amount of money it costs, 20 fags a day, 5 quid a packet, 35 quid a week, thats almost 2 grand a year just on killing yourself, make him VERY aware of the dangers.

You could show him some of the more gory pictures of what smoking does to you. In my experience, smokers only stop when they are ready to and many chronic adult smokers get into the habit as teenagers out of peer pressure. There is no easy answer - you could point out it smells bad, ruins your skin and all those sorts of things. If you are desperate for him to stop, tell his parents but don't expect him to thank you for it. Just keep reminding him about how much that habit costs and what he is doing to his body.
