writes: my son earned some extra Christmas bonus money doing a job recently and he left it in his room his friend visited that day and my son remembers seeing the money prior to the friend leaving his friend received a call from another friend saying he was owed money and needed it paid back asap but when the friend left the money was gone and my son has searched every inch of his room and clothing several times since and he is very upset as he worked hard to earn the extra money he called the friend to ask if he saw if my son might have mislaid it anywhere but he said he didn't know we really trusted him before this and his mother is a good friend of mine too he did leave the friend alone in his room a few times obviously thinking that he could trust him what do i do about it?

reader, anonymous, writes (22 December 2009): I would approach the friend and ask him point blank if he saw any money on the table and based on his reply I would either pursue the issue or drop it until such a time that it happens again as there is no hard evidence that he absconded with it.

I would confront him about it, I doubt you will get the money back, but I would let him know that you know he took it.
The same thing happened to my Mom several years ago, my cousin who was in his 20's stole several hundred dollars from her, we would leave him alone in the house and he took the money. My mom never confronted him about it, like she should have.
