Mild depression?

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I'm sure I'm being melodramtic but I feel as though I'm suffering with mild symtoms of depression but I am too scared to go talk to a doctor about this as I wouldn't know what to say and I'd just feel a bit silly, if you understand me?

I live away from home at uni and lately I have been feeling down. I have a loving family and friends but I've been feeling very isolated and sad. Work has me stressed along with finding a house for next year, living in a flat with inconsiderate messy people and my parents arguing have all played a part in this i think.

I've noticed lately when I'm alone I feel very down, sometimes weepy. I also find myself very irritable and can just snap if provoked. My sleeping patterns have changed a lot. Despite feeling very tired and drained throughout the day, when i go to bed i cant seem to nod off for a long time and i wake up again early in the morning.

Not that it's got anything to do with depression, I have been suffering of late with lower back pains, headaches, and dizzyness when I stand up from laying or sitting down which has never happened to me before so I'm wondering if something is up with my blood sugar levels or something along them lines.

I know I'm not actually depressed because I do get on with things and I am a happy person, but I just want to feel right again and I don't know how (or if) I can talk to a doctor about this??

Thank you for reading

The doctor may want to put you straight on happy pills.... so are you prepared for that?

There is a lot of stuff you can do to combat depression that doesn't involve drugs and your GP may well suggest you go and try them first.

So if you want to give these a go before going to see him then they are:

Multi-vitamins - take one a day, they can sort you out if you are missing one.

Fruit and Veg - how healthy is your diet? If it's full of chemicals / sugar / coffee (I know mine was at uni) then this can affect you.

Exercise - I know you don't have time to go to the gym, but how about you get up early at about 5 / 6 o'clock when it's just getting light and go for a jog. The sun is shining this week. It gives you time to think, time to explore new places, time off from worrying, and when you start to feel the burn endorphins kick in and those things are apparently better than heroin.

Sleep - Just try running down the road and really really making yourself tired one day - Phyically AND mentally - and then get a nice warm shower, a glass of warm milk, no TV or internet, be in bed by 10 and read some fiction. If you are having trouble sleeping then you need to give your body and brain some help. Your brain can be knackered but if you've been sat in working all day then your body won't let you sleep, and the other way round too.

Try the above for a week or two and just try and take some time for yourself to sit and be allowed to have an hour to relax without feeling bad. If it doesn't help then head to the GP.

It's the same with any illness, and exactly the same with a cold. You try the home remedies first, but if it doesn't improve then you need something from the Doc to kick it out of your body.

Good Luck!! xx

Tisha-1 agony auntYou know what? I think all those symptoms you mentioned do warrant a visit to your GP. Not necessarily because you think you are depressed, but because you've experienced changes in your body, dizziness, back pains and headaches. Who knows, it could be a vitamin deficiency or it could be a whole host of things.

How could going to the doctor hurt? And wouldn't it give you some peace of mind to know that things are physically alright with you and you just need some exercise and a decent diet?

I ran your symptoms through the http://symptoms.webmd.com/symptomchecker and got these possiblities: flu, viral syndrome, tension headache, migraine, sinusitis, high blood pressure, lupus, PMS, acute stress reaction, caffeine withdrawal, diabetes type 2, malocclusion (bite out of alignment), nearsightedness, postconcussive syndrome.... just to name some of them.

Go see your doctor, you'll be doing yourself a favor.

Take care.

Hmmm. You know some people don't even know that they have depression. There is a commercial in the U.S. that talks about depression causing physical pains too.

If you talk to a doctor about this, describe all your symptoms and concerns. Try to make sure you don't let him push any antidepressants on you if you don't want any. Oh and please don't take Prozac. It has steroids in it.

It just sounds like you are tired out and stressed, these are all classic symptoms.

You have a loving family and good friends.. so don't worry too much about finding a house for next year, I'm sure you'll be able to live with your family or friends at least until you manage to find something. Focus on your studies and social life, don't get too hung up on the future.

I hope this helps and you start feeling better soon
