A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I'm 15 and I weigh 11 stone. I look at myself as fat, but I know I'm not that fat but for my age I am over weight.

Ii stopped eating for 4 days once and I lost half a stone. As soon as I ate again I put on half a stone again but recently I've been making myself sick after every meal I eat. If I carry on doing this what will happen? Will I lose weight?

A female reader, xxxDaNnIxxx United Kingdom +, writes (16 June 2008):

it isn't how much you weigh it is how you carry your weight. 11 stone is more than i weighed when i was 15, but this could depend on you height, bone indensity and a load of other things. i used to have an eating disorder and it really isnt the right way to go, you will end up with health problems and mess up your metabolism so in the future you will find it harder to lose weight. if you cant stop making yourself sick then go to a doctor before its to late. i know you hear this everywhere but all you need to do is eat healthy and in moderation and exercise. limit yourself to 1/2 days a week where you can eat what you want so you dont deprive yourself and for the rest of the week eat healthily. i hope this helped you and good luck x x

A male reader, anonymous, writes (30 May 2008):

hi, im 16, not much older than u, and i have also made myself sick for quiet a few months as thought of myself fat! but it got to a point where i could not even get out of my bed, as my muscles couldnt function, i look back now and it was horrific.

but i worked through it with help from others and now i am comfortable with me and my body.

so my advice to you would to seek a healthier way to lose weight, and definetly go to your doctor and tell him what you have been doing and why.

personaly, i use slimfast (this doesnt work for evry one) and dont load up on carbs (bread pasta ect.) but you do need some to stay healty. (again not for every one)

"i wish you the best of look and i hope you take my advice, the first step is to tell someone, GOOD LOOK)

A reader, anonymous, writes (14 March 2008):

One of the worst things you can do when you want to loose weight is to stop eating. You may loose weight fast but you'll gain back the weight you've lost very quickly once you start eating again. Also, stopping eating can lead to serious eating disorders.

I wouldn't recommend going on a diet at this age but if you're not happy with your body, try and get your 5 a-day of fruit and veg, don't eat too much sugary and fatty foods, drink lots of water and exercise regularly (don't over do it though). If you don't know what to do or you don't want to do anything by yourself, why not try going swimming with you friends once or twice a week?

But remember to still eat properly, you are not going to do yourself any good starving yourself and you could seriously damage your health.

Hope this helps a little.

Take care!!

A male reader, anonymous, writes (12 March 2008):

Sure, Bulimia Nervosa is a sure fire way to loose weight. And your life. But hey, you will be a thin corpse. Throwing up? The other girl is right, say bye bye to your teeth.

The only way to loose weight is to eat right, three meals a day, healthy meals, none of this diet crap. (It seems a pity we have to use the same words to describe a healthy full meal diet and the crap they put in women's mags)

And while you are doing this, EXCERSISE. That looses you weight permantly and gives you the body you seem to desire.

One of the fun things of crash diets? Your body has to little energy to keep warm, what is one way to keep warm? Blubber, yes your body faced with not enough energy to produce heat will attempt to create EXTRA layers of fat to protect you. Cute eh? In fact, if you REALLY do it wrong, you body will create new layers of fat and break down muscle tissue.

They really should outlaw all these stupid diets. Ban on smoking, ban women's mags! Save a nation!

A female reader, TELLULAH United Kingdom +, writes (12 March 2008):

TELLULAH agony auntYes you will lose weight! and your teeth. And also you will get to a point where you will have to make yourself sick after everthing you eat just to stay at the level of weight you think is acceptable.

My advice is to lose weight healthily. I used to always go without breakfast, until I started a diet. Breakfast will make you lose weight, it starts you off for the day.

If you are truly worried, join weight watchers. They will tell you if you really are overweight, and also give you a healthy eating plan. Also get lots of exercise, and dont be fooled into thinking there is a quick and easy option. Easy options just put the weight back on you twice as quickly, and probably more. Or worse you could kill yourself starving to death.

A female reader, korculan queen Australia +, writes (12 March 2008):

You have an eating disorder called bulimia nervosa. Bulimia is a binge purge cycle. Ie you starve yourself, then eat ravenously then vomit. You will lose weight but also ESSENTIAL electrolytes which will then put you at risk of dehydration. Your teeth also will suffer from the stomach acid from forced vomiting. Also you will have a really sore throat and prone to infections in the throat. Long term effects are stomach ulcers, electrolyte imbalances, changes in brain activity and you could get so weak that you may pass out. Also menstrual problems and your cycle may be intermittent or stop altogether. If you find yourself getting bad in that you eat an orange before vomiting then you know you are really in trouble emotionally. Let me explain people who suffer bulimia will starve, then eat ravenously all the foods which make you put on weight then will get an attack of the guilts. People with bulimia use an orange eaten as a MARKER. IE They will vomit until they see the orange in the vomit as it will not breakdown to mush and the bright colour will be evident in the vomit. This is so that chronic bulimics know when there limit is to avoid bringing up their stomach lining. Please STOP DOING THIS. You are in so much danger of losing more than weight- Your life. Tell your parents or someone you trust and go to your doctor and get a referral to a dietician trained in eating disorders and get some help. Then she or he will put you on a sensible eating plan and reccomend exersise and a healthy diet as the key to losing weight. Please take my advice and promise me you will get help and do not vomit. If you are losing weight to attract a boy then honey he is not worth it. If a boy does not like you because of how you look then you are better off with someone better who will love you for you. This years theme of International womens day on the 8th March was all about looking beyond stereotypes of women as being only beautiful being stick thin and looking at all women as being beautiful and that beauty comes from within and radiates outwards. Darling, I had an eating disorder when I was a teenager for this very same reason. I am now over that stage but it was horrible and I am trying to show you that there are far better ways of losing weight that does not involve wrecking your life. Please promise me you will get help.

A female reader, SuziDee05 United States +, writes (12 March 2008):

Don't mess with eating disorders.

Sure, you may lose weight, but you'll probably also end up in the hospital and you may even destroy your body in ways that can't be repaired.

What you need to do is talk to your dr. about your concerns and ask for a good plan to eat correctly and work out.

Also remember that at this stage of your life, you're GOING to put on a bit of weight. You are maturing and despite what the media tells you, the vast majority of women are NOT stick thin... and on the bright side of that, the majority of men do not WANT women that are stick thin!

A female reader, youngandconfused90 United States +, writes (12 March 2008):

youngandconfused90 agony auntHoney,

I was the same way. I use to eat very little and work off everything i ate. When i went to bed hungry i was proud of myself. But after a whole summer of it, it got old. I started craving to be normal again but after doing it for so long my body could handle normal. I would get sick if i ate a couple potato chips. Not only would my stomach hurt but i would gain weight so easily! It took my two years to get my body back to normal (the way it use to be) Now I have a good method for losing weight and keeping it off. Do ! low self esteem adds ten pounds.at least 30 minutes of cardio a day, it sounds like a lot but it goes by fast and once you get into the habit, its not bad. Then ate little healthy meals every two hours. Now a days there are lots of stuff you can buy that is low in cals and easy to take with you.

Ps don't be so hard on yourself low self esteem adds ten pounds.

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (12 March 2008):

Yes, you will lose lots of weight, then you won't be able to stop, and you will end in hospital, sectioned under the mental health act. A large man will hold you down and they will force a tube down your throat to force feed you with and keep you alive. That's if your internal organs don't fail before they get to you.

Vomiting will also rot your teeth as they are getting covered in stomach acid, and since it is not natural to throw up all the time your hair and skin will go horribly wrong making you look awful.

You are describing Bulimia.

There are lots of websites that will tell you it is fine and encourage you to do it. But remember that anyone with the disease is MENTALLY ILL and will try and justify their own actions by making other people agree with them.

First, find out if you need to lose weight.

http://www.eatwell.gov.uk/healthydiet/healthyweight/

If you decide you need to then eat HEALTHILY and do a bit more exercise. If you stop eating then your body will go into starvation mode and turn every bit of food straight into fat.

Here is help on healthy eating:

http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/articles/article.aspx?articleId=851

and finally, do you watch Hollyoaks? They had a storyline on about this recently. They gave lots of help on the issue too...

http://www.channel4.com/health/microsites/0-9/4health/food/abe_binge.html

Please be careful and remember, you are 15, you WILL put on weight at that age as you are growing boobs and hips and height. It is all good.

Look after yourself and take control of your life in other ways.

Take up karate, it will give you confidence, new friends, and help you burn calories in a safe way leaving lots of space for 3 big meals a day. Yummy.

It's all just begining for you, don't risk it or weaken yourself so you can't enjoy it.

Good Luck x
