I can tell you, as a male what always works for me. I like when girls talk to me and make me feel special, in the sense that I am the guy they want to be with. Also when girls talk to me about stuff that interest me really helps me feel comfortable around them.
Now every guy is different but if possible, see if you can find out the stuff he likes, such as sports, video games etc... then starting a conversation and getting close wont be so hard :).

 One thing guys don't like is a shy girl, show confidence, find out as much as you can about the guy you like without closing him in and bombarding him with questions. Speak to him about something he likes and in the conversation pick a moment to ask him if he likes you. If he does ask him out but don't be over anxious or over confident and then you should be fine.
