Hello people I have a problem, My mum has sudden mood swings sometimes and one minute she's in a great mood and the next she's in a terrible temper what can I say to her to calm her down so she doesn't get these terrbible mood swings that are a little embarassing when she's ranting and raving in public.

[Moderator's note: Any more details about your relationship with mum could help, and maybe also stating your ages. Thank you.]

I note your age and wonder how old you mother is. If this is a new problem (not one that's been going on for years) I would discuss it with other members of your family to see if they have noticed similar changes. Sudden personality changes in the elderly (65+) may be early signs of dementia or other organic brain disease.

The mood swings will be caused by something in particular, so maybe gently talk to her and ask her about why she suddenly changes. Perhaps she's just very insecure about a lot of things and just finds it hard to control her temper when it all goes wrong. Just talk to her a bit and see if she'll open up.
