He was her coach in athletics because she was one of the best. She would tell me" when I grow up, I want to be just like him". She is in college now, and doesn't see him anymore. She's doing a coaching course, and still says she wants to be a P.E teacher. She wrote him a letter when she left school saying how much she appreciated all of his help and support. I think she had a little crush on him as well. Is that a role model? when you want to be like someone?

Yes, that's what you would call a role model. But no, it's not normal to have a crush on your role model.

Yes I think that is a fair way to understand what a role model is, when that person inspires you to be like them in some way, they are a role model to you in that way. Keep in mind, not all roles are good or healthy, even if they are modelled well by someone. If you see someone as a role model who happens to smoke and your view of them inspires you to take up smoking to be "cool like them" or something like that, you might end up being inspired to take on a role that is not good for you.
