Hi I'm looking for a little bit of help, I'm going to my boyfriends house tomorrow and we were planning on having sex for the first time, we are both totally comfortable with this but my only issue is that I'm due to have my period this week but it hasn't started yet, is it possible to try and prevent myself getting my period tomorrow? I currently have no indication that I will get it (normally I have stomach cramps the day before) but I might still get it tomorrow, if anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it

CindyCares agony auntGee, OP, where's the fire ? Why the rush ?

Why making things complicated and interfering with your body chemistry- when all you've got to do is to delay your first time for just a few days ?

Yes, menstrual cycles can be delayed - under medical supervision . Skipping the pill free break for those who are already on the pill ( and if you are not , it's much much better that you get started on the pill before you become sexually active ). Or, getting a prescription for noretisterone, ( synthetic progesteron ), which is what competitive athletes do before an important game or ballet dancers before an important performance etc. This of course require seeing a doctor ; who anyway may very well decide not to humour you up if you are not in the Olympic team or dancing at the Bolshoi Theatre :) , but just feeling a bit frisky.

Just postpone of a few days - the world won't come to a stop for that, you'll avoid tampering unnecessarily with your hormons, and you'll have time to get yourself adequate contraception if you didn't already.

I spent many years working in women's health.

If you are already on the contraceptive pill you can skip your pill free break which would cause you to skip that period but otherwise no, I'm afraid there isn't anything you can do to delay your period this month except cross your fingers and hope that nature delays it for you.

Even if you could get to the doctor and get the contraceptive pill prescribed, it would be too late for this weekend and you're supposed to start the pill on the day your period starts anyway.

Make sure you have an ample supply of condoms with you and make an appointment for contraceptive advice ASAP. Ideally you should have done this before you made plans to sleep with him but better late than never.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (21 January 2016):

You need to see a doctor and talk about contraception. If you're ready for sex then you need to be mature enough to talk openly about how you are going to prevent pregnancy.

At 16 anything you see a doctor about is confidential. You can discuss having an implant in your arm - which means you'll never have to remember to take a pill; you could get the contraceptive injection or look at the contraceptive pill.

You've left it too late now but the pill can be used to delay your periods. You have to ask you doctor to do it and you can only do it for one period. Or there are pills that mean you never even have a period while you take them. Whatever you do use I would also say at your age you should be using condoms too. You do not want at 16 or 17 a baby arriving as that's not fair on a baby, you or your bf! It's better to be safe than sorry.

For tomorrow you've definitely left it too late as you can't see a doctor, pick up a prescription and start taking the pill and hope it delays your period. If you come on then maybe you'll reschedule for another time.
