writes: Hi, I'm 14 years old, and my family has a history of bad periods. What I mean is heavy flow, pretty regular from the first period, and moodiness so bad my mom has to take medication. I got my period last january, and I can tell you that all of these are true. I've had a regular period every month except for one, a heavy flow rather early on, and I act horribly without even realizing it before my period. I also get terrible cramps and occasionally headaches. My period itself isn't that bad, i return to my usual sunny attitude and besides from the heavy flow I'm fine. My question is, is there any way to deal with the horrible PMS? Any advice about identifying when I'm acting unreasonable, and how to deal with that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just like there can be many levels of depression, there can be many levels of PMDD. You may be looking at some of the more severe symptoms. You may want to go check with a doctor just in case - and besides... he or she may have valuable information for you (individually YOU, not just some generalized advice, like you may find here).
Exercise is always a good way to fight symptoms. Tracking your period is also valuable, as is taking meds (The Pill, Advil, Midol), or just simply learning when your cycle is coming and doing things like prioritizing a massage or something else that relaxes you and makes you happy.
Sometimes a doctor can help you understand what is best to combat your body to get the best result for yourself in your everyday life. Good luck!

I don't get thoughts of suicide or anything I just blow up for no reason. Like yesterday I cried because a mcdonalds commercial came on. My sister is on the pill for her period, but I don't think my mom would allow me getting on it when i just got my period in january. I just wanted to know if you had some advice, like "exercise helps mood swings". But thanks anyway!

Sounds like you might have PMDD running in your family.

Things you can do: really track your period and know when to expect it so that you can expect your mood to go whacky. I always get one zit when the Dark Week (as I like to call it) is starting... when I see that single zit, I know that my tears and anger are probably the result of hormonal unrest, rather than my fella.
The very best advice I can give you is to talk to your doctor! Maybe medication will help... or at least your doctor can give you more ideas on how to deal with it. Good luck, sweet!!
