I spoke to the nurse and she said not to worry unless it happened again, but i'm now worrying that the pill isn't working or something. has anyone else had experience of this or know anything about it? Any advice would be really appreciated

I found the pill to be fine for me initially but after a while if I missed about 2 pills then I would suffer what you are having and that is break through bleeds, they are more common than you think and it really does depend on if you have missed the odd pill or not?
You could actually ask the doctor if this happens again to possibly change the pill you are on but if it agrees with you and doesn't make you sick which some can do then be tentative about changing.
There are other methods of contraception as well though such as the implant or injection, I never had either one myself but maybe you should look into either one of these as an alternative as well.
We can all be guilty of forgetting to take a pill so the other 2 options do overcome that problem but the injection lasts for I think 3 months and I am not sure about the implant.
Once you have had children though doctors often offer women the coil (normally a hormonal coil - most often), to be fitted as it is much easier after childbirth to have one. I was moved onto one of these this years after many years on the pill but with numerous breaks I must add.
The pill is still doing it's job as such and the bleeding is more of a dreadful inconvenience and yucky feeling as well. So if it is missed pills then you need to consider this. Maybe taking them at the same time EVERY day is the key to preventing this from happening again.
