 If he has something like "snap-chat" on his phone the SMS's can be from there. It can be that he NEEDS to update his divers on his phone with the LATEST security apps because it MIGHT be malicious malware.
It can be that a friend's phone was hacked or a friend sent him a link that he opened and IF he opened it... he will keep getting them.
So yeah, it CAN be that he didn't sign up for anything... but... it can also be that he did.
If you two share bank account you can always check and see if there are any payments for web-cam "services"...
