Hi Dan,
I'm glad you liked my advice!
I'm a little bit biased, but the more languages you know, the better. Spanish is becoming very ubiquitous and having a good command of Spanish will open doors.
People need fulfillment, and life can be a real bitch if you're in the wrong job. Don't rush into something, but remember, you can change careers if you're miserable.
Think of the things you're good at, things that interest you, and things are enjoy... those may be clues regarding your own business.
Ciao,
S

People need fulfillment. It's a basic, basic emotional need. There is a huge difference between having a job, and having a fulfilling career.
I can tell you that life is a real bitch when you're in the wrong job. It sucks so much to get up and face another day of throwing away your talents, being stuck in a place you don't want to be, and doing a job your heart's not in (even if the salary is good!).
You are right to put lots of thought into a future career... even though family and church come before work (at least in my opinion), work is a huge part of your waking life and you SHOULD be fulfilled.
I was in the wrong job for a long time (I worked in retail). I spent every moment either dreading work, recovering from work, or at work. I would throw up every morning before work, I hated it so much. I don't mind being nice to people, but I hated retail for all of the above reasons.
I can relate to your frustration with family and friends. People that love you mean well, but they don't understand. My family and friends would tell me things like, "That's life Sara, everyone hates their jobs," or, "you're lucky you have a job, so many people are out of work." I wanted to scream when I heard comments like that.
You only life once, and you need the fulfillment of using your talents, doing work your heart is in, and having a life outside of work. It frustrated the hell out of me that no one seemed to understand that. No offense to anyone in retail but I'd rather live in the street than go back to that. I'm not trying to undermine the plight of people who do live in the streets. I'm trying to stress that life is a bitch when you're in the wrong job, and life is too short to be miserable.
You need fulfillment, and I think that marketing is a good career choice if it will bring you just that. What is your passion? Have you been able to pinpoint it? What are your talents at? You can be good at anything if you try hard enough, and want it badly enough, so finding your passion is really what counts. Of course, it's a shame to waste your natural talents. If you can find a career that allows you to employ your talents and it's your passion, then you've made it!
Talk to people, do research, and try to get experiences. Perhaps you can do an internship in the field.
Remember, it's common for young people to change careers a lot nowadays. Friends have pointed out that with the changes in technology, some professions that never existed are created, and, sadly, some jobs become obsolete. Marketing is pretty stable, but it's good to have many skills.
If you choose a career in marketing I recommend that you learn some Spanish :)
