A female United Kingdom age 41-50, anonymous writes:

can someone help me please with a bit of advice on what to do about parents house. my parents in their 60s but own their own house. im live with them but cause im not working at the moment and finding it hard find work i cant move out. im on the housing list i want to move out and have my own place and i have points and you bid for a place. cant get a private place as got no ganratour. anyway parents if they ever went into a home i could lose the house to pay for it so to keep it safe were thinking about leaving it to me in my name now. what do we do and would this make housing list different or would i be able to still be on it. do you lose your points and i would have to tell jobcentre so would i lose benefits. just want to know if its worth them giving me house in my name yet or leave it.

sammi star agony auntSpeaking from experience, if you own a home you won't get any benefits. They count property as savings and regular income. You could stay on the housing list but you would be at the very bottom and considering even people nearer the top of the list have trouble getting a place, you wouldn't be offered anything.

This is something you need to speak to a professional about. If affording a solicitor is out of the question (as it is for many people-damn fees so expensive!) then look into solicitors in your area who offer free advice mornings or even go the the CAB - Citizens Advice Bureau.

There are pros and cons as having a house in your name may prevent ou being on the housing list, but I do not think it impacts jobseekers allowance. Please seek professional advice as you do not want to make a decision based on wrong info. Best of luck.

A male reader, Serpico United States +, writes (5 July 2012):

1 - if you want to house, you need to earn your own money to pay for it. Just the way it is.

2 - the reason many nations are going bankrupt is by many people doing the same exact thing you are proposing. So what you're saying is everyone else needs to pay for your parents elderly care because you want a house for free.

Last, you show your age as 30-35 and from the UK, yet I had trouble reading the "English" you wrote above. If you ever submit a resume or cover letter written like that, it will be in the wastebasket after the first sentence. Perhaps that is why you are having such a hard time finding a job.
