He started to grab my arms as I was smacking him, but not hard, just on his arms, but when he would grab me he would do it really hard. Then he would start punching his head saying go on, hit me where it hurts, I don't understand why all of a sudden he was like this, is it the drink talking?

Sounds like the drink was talking. However, your question brings up a double standard that I don't appreciate. Why is it that many women think that it is okay for them to hit their men?
It is no more appropriate for a woman to hit a man than for a man to hit a woman. A man is often stronger than a woman, this is true. However, in my mind physical violence directed at either partner in a relationship is not okay.
Perhaps you should ask yourself why you were hitting him? Was it the drink talking?
