if you lose one to two pounds a week you are more likely to keep it off and it is healthier that way too - in a year you could get rid of a 100 pounds doing that so although it may seem like forever, it will come off. Make health your goal, not thinness etc - even dropping 10% of your weight e.g. if you are 220lbs and lost 22lbs, believe it or not it makes a big difference to your health just dropping 10%. also smaller goals make it seem more possible, if you aim for 2lbs a week then its not as sacrey and not as daunting a challenge as trying to drop a 100lbs. also, how tall are you because 8 stone may be too small for your frame. I am 10 stone and for 5ft 5 - i'm healthy.

Definitely starting to exercise is a really good thing to do- this will help you lose weight right from the word go. Inactivity is one of the main causes of weight gain and if you can do something about this then you are on the right road. However, you don't want to lose too much weight too quickly, firstly because it's not safe for your health and secondly because it's not sustainable and you won't keep it off in the long term. You need to have a real change of lifestyle what involves diet and exercise. Plenty of fresh fruit and veg, protein and fibre, complex carbs; less in the way of fatty and sugary foods. Simple things like having a baked potato instead of chips, that sort of thing-there is loads online about healthy eating.

I read that losing 1lb of weight equates to not eating/using about 3500 calories. This helps to give you an idea of how much you can lose. Running or walking a mile uses 100 calories, so if you cut down on your food and try doing some exercise you should see some results. How about walking 2-3 miles a day and cutting down what you eat by 250 cals per day? This should equate to about 1lb a week, which over two months with be about half a stone. You shouldn't try to lose the weight too quickly as your body needs to get used to the new regime. As you get more used to exercise you will probably be able to do more high-impact sports, such as running for example, which will help you burn more calories. Swimming is also really good for you, and also doesn't impact on your joints which might be a good starting point if you are a bit overweight to start with.

You can't lose 8 stone in a couple of months- nobody can- without cutting off a limb or some such. But starting to exercise will really make a massive difference. Don't overdo it at first and injure yourself, which is easy to do. And I can't over-emphasise how good walking is- you use up calories and don't even notice you're doing it. Have a good look at what you eat as well. The odd treat is fine but healthy eatig is central to weight loss. I also recommend keeping a food diary which will help you keep track of what you are consuming.

Good luck and stick at it! It will take time and not be easy, but if you really want to do it you can.
