http://www.herpes.com/hsv1-2.html
Even though genital HSV-1 is not as bad as HSV-2, you still want to be careful about transmitting HSV-1. If I have a cold sore, I am always careful and do not give my wife oral sex until it is completely gone. Actually, after 30 years together, she is probably one of the many people who have herpes and never has an outbreak.
Actually, in some ways, HSV-1 can be more dangerous than HSV-2, as it can infect the eye and even the brain in rare cases. It can cause blindness if it badly infects the eye.
Taking L-lysine and avoiding L-arginine is very beneficial to not getting outbreaks. If you take L-lysine, it should be at least 1500 mg daily, although I have found that 2000 mg works better. Walnuts, almonds and peanuts are among the foods highest in L-arginine and it is best to avoid them. L-arginine stimulates the herpes virus and L-lysine suppresses it.

yes yes yes. never give a blow job till a cold sore has completely gone or you can pass it on 100%
take a tablet called l-lycine every day and it drastically helps in the number of outbreaks you get.

A
reader, anonymous, writes (2 February 2010): Yes. Oral herpes is normally HSV-1 (herpes simplex virus type 1). Genital herpes is normally HSV-2. However, it is possible to have either type on either location, although oral HSV-2 is pretty rare. Genital HSV-1 is not nearly as rare. Genital HSV-2 is more severe than genital HSV-1 - more painful and reoccurs more. It is not unusual to have only 1 outbreak of genital HSV-1.
