If you don't mind a little mess, it's perfectly acceptable. (A little soap and water quickly fixes the mess problem.) Using an old towel is probably the most common accommodation. It may also be a good time to experiment with sex in the shower or bathtub. Yes, you need to think about the hazards of slips and falls, and the fixtures get in the way, but it CAN be done and provides a more playful break from your normal pattern.
Many women claim that a good, strong, orgasm right at the start of their period, or just before, relieves menstrual cramping. That is a "husbandly duty" I was always very willing to perform!
Very few guys will give oral sex to a girl on her period. If that's a regular part of your lovemaking, start with a good bath. (The bath or shower is a good idea just before period sex in general, whether you expect cunnilingus or not.) Immediately insert a tampon, then proceed with all the normal foreplay (including oral). Take the tampon out just before he enters you - otherwise, it can get pushed far up inside and cause some nasty problems.

Me and my boyfriend usually wait until the second or third day into my period. The first and second days can get really messy.
Use a condom, and put a towel underneath of you and after you both might want to take a shower as sometimes there is a bad odor or like I said it can be very messy.
and to answer your question, no it's not bad to have sex on your period. It will not affect anything. Just remember that the first ten days after your period are the days you are most likely to get pregnant, so be careful.
Take care

It's ok to have sex while you have your period, if you boyfriend isn't grossed out by it. You can still get pregnant so make sure you are using protection and it's always smart to keep a towel under you if you don't want to get any thing dirty, it is also useful if you want to "dry' up a little because it can get very wet.
Have fun and be safe =]
