Is it ok to go to the dr when I feel sort of sick rather than waiting till I am extremely sick?

I am getting over a case of bronchitis (I am still coughing and I am having problems falling asleep at night but I feel like I am recovering from it).

One of the mistakes that I made is waiting too long to go to my doctor to get checked out. I just assumed that my cough would go away on its own and I was wrong. It kept on getting worse and worse until I went to the doctor. I guess on the subconscious level, I always felt that I should feel bad enough before I go to the doctor. I now feel like an idiot for not going to the doctor sooner.

In the future reference, is it okay if I go to the doctor when I am beginning to feel sick instead of waiting for myself to feel extremely sick?
