Is it normal to have cramps and bleed after taking the morning after pill?

Question - (2 December 2009) 1 Answers - (Newest, 2 December 2009)
A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I took the morning after pill yesterday, towards the end of the 72 hour period (like the 60th hour or something) because I drunkenly had sex on saturday night, and even though I know we used protection, I just wanted to be on the safe side.

Since then though i've been having abdominal cramps (a bit like period cramps) and been spotting blood. Is that normal?! Also, does the bleeding mean that I actually was pregnant?

A female reader, old-spinstah United Kingdom +, writes (2 December 2009):

Both symptoms are quite normal. The morning after pill can cause the womb lining to come away to stop an egg from implanting. That's what's causing the bleeding and the cramps - it doesn't mean that you were pregnant. The "period" will probably last as long as a normal period and feel similar. Your next period will probably not come when you are expecting it. It may be early or late.
