Is it normal for vaginal area skin to have darker pigmentation that the surrounding skin?

A female age 26-29, anonymous writes:

I am a 20 yr old female who is Caucasian and my skin tone is quite pale.

This is embarrassing but my outer vagina lips and also the area near my anus is a very dark brownish color. It's several shades darker than my inner thighs and the rest of my area down there. It sort of looks as if it's dirty which I know it's not.

I shave my vagina regularly and wash good. It's always been dark and I don't know why. I'm embarrassed about it. Is it normal?

Honey, you're so normal that you don't need to worry about this anymore. If you were all one color you'd be the strangest girl in your town. Stop worrying

Honeypie agony auntYep, totally normal.

Just like your lips (inside and out) have a different color from the skin on your face, so does your genitals.

If you (at some point) look at a man's genitals you will also notice a variation of skin colors. When aroused they are even more prominent, because of a higher amount of blood flow to the area.

As long as you are not experiencing itching, discomfort, pain, discharge, or a foul odor then there is nothing for you to worry about. If you do have any of these symptoms, whether accompanied by hyperpigmentation or not, you should see your gynecologist as soon as possible as these symptoms can be a sign of infection.
