Is he just being a "lad" or did he mean it about not wanting to move in with me?

Hi,

I overheard my boyfriend saying to his mate that going travelling for while would be a good way to put off moving in with me. Is he likely to really mean this, and not want to move in with me, or is he just being a lad?

I haven't asked him to move in with me, but I'm still upset about his comment. He doesn't know I heard him say it. Does this mean he's not thinking about us as a long term thing?

A reader, Rebecca Batchelor +, writes (1 May 2005):

Rebecca Batchelor agony auntIt could have been a flippant comment made to his mate to make him look as if other things were more important to him than a relationship. A lad type thing to say, all to do with creating a certain image.

However, it could also have been the truth and that he feels things are a bit too heavy for him, too fast. This seems more unlikely as it isn't as if you have asked him to move in with you but perhaps he suspects you will.

Is he thinking of you as a long term relationship? You need to ask him, before he goes away, if he is going. Ask him how he sees the future for both of you. Does he want committment on both sides or is he just seeing your relationship as a stepping stone in his life? You have to ask him to put your mind at rest.

Good luck.
