He said it was okay and decided where we ate lunch. However, next day, he said on email he couldn't hang out because he didn't have enough money and had a class's project and also said that he would contact me if he had enough money. But one day after that, he said we could hang out for lunch on the condition that I pay money for him, citing he paid restaurant's extra money(I didn't have enough money so I can't pay whole at that time) for me when his birthday party. I said it was okay and he accepted my offer. Incidentally,on the day of date, he said he skipped his breakfast. So.. I can't understand his feeling.. These are too confusing for me to grasp.. Does he see me as just a friend? Please help me out!

Some details on how he behaves around you otherwise would be helpful. :)
