How do I gain weight?

I am 5'5, about 100 lbs. I have been skinny all my life. I don't starve myself, but I also do not have a big appetite. Eating has never been something that I crave or thoroughly enjoy. I have always been very self-conscious about my body and I feel abnormal or like freak at times because of how skinny I am. When I do eat more, the fat goes to my tummy, and my upper body remains thin and bony. I also don't work out and am not a physically active person. I do not have the time and patience for it.

Any advice on how I should gain weight aside from working out and building muscles? Any pills or supplements that I can take to help me increase my appetite?

Best way to gain weight is by eating the proper diet and working out so you can gain body mass. Do you like smoothies? Make one using bananas and your favorite fruit and drink 3-4 times a day. Believe me, I was a hardgainer to the 100th power and I gained 10 pounds in 2 week just by eating a healthier diet packed in omega 3 fatty acids and upped my milk and protein intake!

I had exactly the same problem as you at your age.

Ask your mum and I bet she did too. It's a genetic thing. Unfortunately now I've hit 25 my body has decided it doesn't want to be skinny any more and I'm unable to live on my diet of chocolate and chinese take away any more. :o(

You could try going on the pill as that quite often makes you put on weight and can make your boobs grow a bit too. (mostly through fat though)

Also, I am FULLY aware of how boring exerxise is but after actually putting in the effort to find out about it - it's not that bad.

I just swing my arms back and forth when I'm stood waiting for the kettle to boil, or the washing to finish etc. Also, iff you have a wii, then get wii fit as that is great and gives you little yoga poses that stretch various muscles and I do them when I can. (You could also just join a yoga class - probably cheaper) Just 5 stretches at a time a few times a day will take seconds but can make a difference.

Good Luck!! xx

jessica04 agony auntI would recommend seeing a nutritionist either at school or at a gym. They will have actual schooling on an appropriate diet. As far as gaining weight in certain areas, it just happens that way. I gain around my midsection, and its really annoying.

Try high protein. Even though empty carbs are a faster way to put on weight, they can be more damaging to your body in the long run because they process into sugar much faster.

Mostly weight training athletes are the ones who convert food into muscle and need to eat a lot to gain weight. They also spend HOURS in the gym to do so. Speak to a professional who can set you on the healthiest path.

I forgot to add that if you want to get rid of tummy fat, do yoga, dance and curl-ups - do NOT do sit-ups.

You also mentioned you don't have the patience to do active things. Well, if you purely want to get fat, then eat junk. If you want to stay healthy and fit, then follow my idea.

1) Break up the usual 2 or 3 meals a day you have into 5 to 7 smaller meals. Eat once every 1.5 to 3 hours.

2) Head to the gym or put something together at home and do some light weight training. Also, do some cycling or running. Swimming helps a great deal.

3) Carbs to give you energy and protein to repair and maintain your muscles.

4) Don't take pills. However, there are weight gain shakes you can get. Since you live in Canada, try heading into GNC and take a look at their selection. When I was doing long distance cycling and weight training, my buckets of powder cost me $50 on average. A lot of them have really awfully sweet tastes. I suggest vanilla. You may regret on getting strawberry.

5) Optional: Stop drinking milk and replace it with So Good Soya Original.

In the beginning, it will be hard but start off slow and ease yourself into it. When you get to a weight and fitness you're comfortable with, continue to eat smaller meals a day, multiple times a day, but eat less carbs and don't eat heavy before you go to bed. Keep up the cardio and you will be fine.
