A female Australia age 51-59, *ustmy5cents writes:

Hello all. Thank you in advance for taking the time to help me find a solution to my problem. I have just started a job after being flogged due to Covid. I love the job and the staff I work with are great the thing is many of the staff I take direction from speak in broken English. When directions are given its muddled and the more I try to seek clarification the explanation gets worse. Even when I take notes with drawings I'm left looking inadequate and feel stupid for having to repeatedly ask what it is I'm supposed to do. Too many times one says do it this way, so I do, then the other says I've done it wrong and to do it another. I kinda got upset out of pure frustration and snapped I can't work with two people telling me one job two different ways and in turn they got annoyed with me. Im in hospitality and we do a lot of functions in a fast paced and production environment. I'm just tired of looking like the idiot when I'm both skilled, capable and creative. I was pulled aside by a colleague and told they and others experience the same frustration as I because we just struggle with the language barrier. Not sure what or what to do. Like I said, this is my dream job so leaving is not an option. Thanks for reading

NoodlyCatastrophe agony auntHow about using flash cards to communicate major instructions?

Eg:

- Do X.

- Complete Y.

- Customer Z needs aid.

Fill in the X, Y and Z with the specifics. That way, the main instruction is understood, and what is needed is the target.

Alternatively, setup a meeting with HR and tell them about the issue. Get your manager/supervisor involved.
