A female United States age 41-50, *likenight writes:

I had a baby 8 days ago. I am still bleeding, like I am on my period. Also, I feel swollen and like all my insides are pushed out in my vaginal area. When does the bleeding stop, and when do you go back to normal? Do I really have to wait 6 weeks to have sex again? My friend said she only waited 3 and it was o.k.

penta agony auntHow long you wait depends on how you feel "swollen and like all my insides are pushed out in my vaginal area." With my first, I was seriously bruised and couldn't even sit on a hard chair for almost three months. With my second, I was up and around in 4 weeks. I didn't have an episiotomy either time. Take the "six weeks" thing as an average, and do what works for your body. Just take it easy for a while, though.

My post-delivery bleeding for both was just over 2 weeks. I think it depends on you -- every woman will be different.

eyeswideopen agony auntIt sounds normal to still be bleeding after 8 days of giving birth especially if this was your first. Talk to your doctor if you are worried, that's why they get paid the big bucks. The 6 weeks wait on sex is for your comfort and well-being. If you had an epistomy then that needs the time to heal as well. Relax and go rock that wonderful bundle of joy!
