I'd like to get a good idea whether or not they're more than just friends before I go into a relationship, it'd save me some heartache.

Of course they can just be best friends! Most of my best friends are girls and my best friend since I was 3 is a girl. Some girls I date can get jealous of this too, so you aren't alone, but you just have to trust her!
