writes: Life is complicated a lot! My best friend told me today that she likes me. I used to be in love with her but never said anything. The problem is that she recently had a baby and I'm not sure if she wants me for me or somebody to be a father figure to her child.She's been my friend for years and I love her a lot but I'm confused regarding her intentions.We're still in school for another year so what would people and parents think? Please help. I want to be with her in my own way because I always protected her but I'm scared...

It's very hard to be romantically involved with someone who has a child without taking a parental role. I don't suggest letting your relationship go past that point if you're not ready for that. You likely won't have much time to go out for dinner and to movies, because she's got to be at home taking care of baby. She has to act like an adult. Are you ready for that?
If yes, go for it. If not, you're probably better off as just friends.

reader, anonymous, writes (6 April 2009): You're too young to even be considered a father figure. Be supportive of her, but not for a child that isn't yours. Not at this age. It will only cause more confusion and pain for the child if you get too involved. Get the real father to man-the-fuck-up.
