 yeah he probably is just as confused as you. but for the record.. guys do NOT like a self conscious girl. even if you are just fishing for compliments. (not saying you are, I just know a lot of girls that are like that.) but yeah you should definitely suggest you both go out and do coffee or something. and be confident! guys are attracted to confidence. even if the person isn't that good looking, the fact that they're confident in themselves makes them more attractive.
