My first and most important point is that Girls aren't from mars. We breath the same air as boys and have similar experiences to them.
We will happily talk to people, we can be quite polite at times and therefor dont mind initiating in conversations with people, it doesnt mean we are romanticaly interested in them and it takes more than one interaction for a friendship to form.
We also seek acceptance or dont want people to feel bad so we'll happily laugh at your jokes if you think there funny...
also laughter and smiles are common flirting techniques, not all girls flirt in an attracted to you way, they are just friendly.
So my guess is the girls your talking to are just being girls and unless your a complete arse then they will happily laugh along with you.
