I'm having wierd periods after getting a contraceptive implant. Anyone heard of this?

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Okay

In the beginning of March I had the contraceptive implant. My doctor said that my periods would be different like longer or heavier and that it's all normal.

Before I had the implant my periods were pretty off anyway, like I would come on 1 month and 2 weeks instead of the normal month and when I did come on it was about 3 days of blood but then I would stop for about half a day and then it was as if the blood was clotted and came out really dark brown and clumpy.

I told my mum and she said that it was my body changing and stuff but thats exactly what is happening to my period now that I have the implant.

So it makes me think that maybe my weird discharge before could have been becuase I'm infertile? I have tried to go to the doctor but I'm afraid that I'll sound really silly and just waste the doctors time.

So my question is this, has anyone else had problems with their periods like I did (coming on, stoping then coming on weird)? And for any one who has had the implant or pill, have really weird periods like me?

Thank you so much

xxx

You honestly have nothing to worry about. Believe me its normal... Unfortunately. I've been on the implant since the beginning of august this year and I came off for a day about 2 weeks ago and then been on again. It feels like I haven't been off and its really annoying because not only do I hate being on but so does my bf. I get red blood then sometimes brown blood and I get really worried but nothing really changes. The only this is I don't get cramps as much as I did. It comes for one day or the week and that's it. I can't stand being on my period as it is and I just want to take it out now. Should I wait or not?? Help.

hello, i had the implant put in a few months ago and my doctor insisted that I was on my period when I had it put in. After that, my period only lasted 3 days and it was over and done with really quickly, but then a few days later i came on and i was on for about 2 weeks. when I finally came off I was really relieved, then BAM, back on again a week later for another 3 weeks. I came on literally 2 days after finishing again and it's carried on like this ever since... i keep getting a brown blood as well and i'm not really sure how to control this or if it will settle down soon on its own? if anyone knows please let us all know!

this is completely normal i have been on the implant for about 4 and half years now.it was amazing for the first 3 years as periods would not be often and would last for slightly longer when i was on.for the past 6months i have been struggling with it as i have been on for this whole time somedays its heavy and other more of thick discharge but still have to wear tampons just incase.i have stopped for a few days and have come back on i do think it would be worth coming off it or going on the pill as well as i have notice mood swings from being on and thicker hair growth too which is a side effect

A female reader, anonymous, writes (22 March 2011):

i had my first implant for 3 years for the first year i had odd periods this from what i ahve read is due to the amount of hormone released in the first yuear is higher than the two subsequent years and apparently the brown gloopy period was due to my lack of abdominal excersize, i then went two years without a full period just a small amount of spotting from time to time. I am now on my second implant and fourth year and it is now i am having problems as i believe that the second raise in hormone dosage is what has caused me to get vaginosis which is very alike to thrush and when i have been "coming on" if that is what you could call it its has been painful, brown and gloopy, uneven, frequent and has caused spots, facial hair growth (eyebrows and hair on top lip have got thicker) and mood swings. I have been doing research on the implant and have found it can also cause dizziness, hair loss as well as many other side affects. But as i say for the first 3 years on this contraception it was the best type of contraception i have had ever used i would advise that once the three years are up you switch to another form of contraceptive from 1 - 3 years and give your body a break from the constant hormonal imbalance.

Hi, Ive been on the implant for about 6 months now and my periods have been all over the place! When I first got it I had my period for 3 weeks, had a couple of days off then 3 weeks again, another couple of days of and another 3 weeks of period. Last month was the first time when I got my period for only 1 week! but then after one week of nothing I got it again.

Its driving me crazy!! Im pretty sure it is also affecting my moods and spots. Im really not quite sure what to do because I inicially got it because im going on a gap year soon and my mum wants me to be protected no matter what.

I used to be on the pill, which I was very satisfied with. Im thinking of going back on it, but the only problem is that I will most likely forget to take it some days ones im away. :/

To those who have problems with the implant why not go on the pill as well. Because it will control ur periods, I have been lucky since getting my implant as I don't have periods. But my friends all went on the pill aswell :) hope this helps

I'm also finding my periods are longer and heavier than before now I'm on the implant. I hate not having any idea when I'm going to get it or for how long and feel totally out of control with my cycle.

I've been on it for 7 months and thinking of having it removed as I'm miserable. But should I persevere? is there anyone out there who thinks it's worth persevering and it'll settle down???

Hi ive had the implant in 4 6 weeks and ive been bleeding for 5! If you research the web re the implant then you will find out that ur periods with either become lighter, heavier, longer or shorter. This wil last for the 1st year. Your doctor may not of told you this because all my doc said was that i might not get periods which i was happy about. I am thinking of having the implant out as im really heavy and going though a super plus packet of tampax a week!

Hi, I had exactly the same periods as you before i was on any contraceptive except mine generally went the other way, it would start brown and end up red! Going on the pill made no difference to this. If you a worried you should see a doctor, they wouldnt think youre silly but i want you to know that having the same periods as you i now have a daughter so i hope that helps you x

Hey, i had my implant put in just over a year ago. it was fine, and has been fine for that time, with no periods at all! A couple of days ago i realised that i was spotting, i didnt think much of it, but it got heavier and heavier making me worry more!

its now been 5 days, before i got the implant, my periods would last maximum of 3 days and very light!

they are now, longer and more heavier, however. it did take a year to get a period atall. the good outweighs the bad.

the brown clumpy blood is just normal, its just dead blood cells. probably from your uterus building up and breaking down over a long period of time. i wouldnt worry.

Hi i've had my implant for nearly a year now and my period was really bad at first and i was on for like 2 months straight with a couple of days break and then my period just stopped but now i've randomly come on again and i've been on it for two weeks, i'm guessing this is just normal... I wouldnt recommend the coil it really messes with your periods too, stick with the implant it might change when you get it changed it just varies xx

I have had the implant for nearly 2 years now and my periods have been all over the place from the beginning!! I was told they would probably become irregular and they were not kidding. i have a period for about 10 days then stop for 1 day then i start all over again for another 2-3 weeks normally. i never know when i am going to start because i am on for long periods of times. i am going to leave this 1 in until the end of the 3 years but will not have another 1 put in, im also slightly anemic which makes everything so much worse, my mood swings are terrible. im thinking of trying the coil after i have the implant removed does anyone have an opinion??

I have had my current impanon in for over a year now, it is my third one and I am only having trouble with it now. I have had my period for nearly a month now and this is the longest that I have had it. I never had any problems with the last 2 implants that I had and I am starting to get really worried about it. Normally I would bleed for a couple of days up to a week then nothing till next month, normally I am quite regular, but not this time. I am unsure what to do and I am starting to think that maybe it is time to try something new.

Ive been on the implant for about 3 months, but my periods are really weird!! ill have one (very light) for a few days and then none for a day and then it will come back again. and It lasts about 2 to 3 weeks like that and then im period free for another while! I think the implant just messes up your periods! I don't think you should be too worried cos i clot too!

Hello, I had my implant put in mid November so it's been just over a month and a half and I used to get on-off periods every month and two weeks or so. I bleed quite often and my doctor said it's normal. I get the brown stuff too and the doctor said it shouldn't last long and all should return to normal after a year.

I hope I've helped :) x

hey, i had the implant in last april 30th, so had it quite a while, i had 1 period after it, then i would just spot here and there, but for the last 5 6 weeks, ive had a really dark lumpy discharge, just like a period but nastier, i wouldnt call my doctor because i felt stupid as well, but ive booked a phone call appointment tomorrow at 2.30, to talk to a nurse over the phone and find out more, but from what ive just been reading over the internet this sounds normal with most women who are on this kind of contrception. dont worry. i think all is normal. ill let you know what the nurse says. hope this helps

Hi

I have had the implant since april. at first my periods seemed to be slowing down. When i was on i was really light and the blood seemed to be brown i thought it was because my periods were stopping however the past couple of months i have been on every two weeks and this last time i seem to be heavier and the blood started off brown n clumpy. About the sixth day that i was on i started bleeding normally and had really bad period pain. I dont think you should worry everyone is differnet and the implant effects them in different ways apparently you will be irregular for the first year n its ment to settle after that.

Hope that helps you

Bee=]

Hello, i've had the implant since around January '09 my periods were very iregular at first and now ive not come on my period for about 5 weeks, this is asolutly normal. The implant is a type of hormone and will affect your period scheldule. If your periods begin to get annoying you can go to your GP or young persons clinic and ask for the pill which they can give you while you have your implant to help your periods become regular.

Hey, Ive been on the implant since the 5th november 2007, and well it's the start of may now and my periods are still mucked up. some times i come on for like 3 weeks and it's almost everytime brown stuff, and then bleeding, then brown stuff again but for ages.

They said it should have all calmed down by now, but it's still really quite bad. It makes me think should i get it taken out but then i will have other problems lol.

But i spose there is good sides of having this implant, but i just wish my periods would sort there self out.

But dont be afraid of going to the doctor, i went because i had a really blocked noes, and if you dont think thats not wasting there time then...lol.

dummyduckling agony aunti have very strange periods too and im on the pill i come on very heavy and then maybe stop for a day then come on light then heavy again. this is more then likley the pill working with my body. but dont worry about wasting the doctors time if you think you may be infertile then see the doctor. although you being infertile is highly unlikely because your having periods, thick discharge is common and irregular or strange periods are also common on the pill or with the implant but if you have any concerns talk to your doctor your not wasting their time. i hope this helped.
