A female reader, anonymous, writes (12 May 2008):

Being concerned about his drinking is a very good sign that your boyfriend is an alcoholic. I am concerned about you! Unfortunatey there is absolutely nothing you can do to get him to stop drinking. Take care of yourself, believe me he won't take care of you or himself. Consider him a lost cause because he will only stop when he has lost everything in his life, been to jail with a DUI and is close to death. Since you are 18yrs old you can have good relationships with people who do not spend their free time and money on getting drunk.

If your boyfriend drinks every day there is a very good chance that he is an alcoholic. Try as you might you will not be able to get him to stop. He already seems to have made the choice between you and alcohol. In that you are 18yrs. old the best thing that you can do is to get out of the relationship. Alanon is a good group to join while you are getting over the hurt concerning the choice to not be with this young man.
