I'd suggest just honestly telling him why - that at least can prove some closure instead of leaving him with uncertainty, cluelessness.
P.S.: "It's not you, honey, it's me" sounds like the oldest lie in the book.

Trust he will respect your decision to end things, At the end of the dau he can only accept it.
