This is a question specific to the individual. You can't ask how you can get a girlfriend or what teenage girls like in boys. It's not accurate.
Example: Back in high school, there were 'crowds' of people that follow a specific standard of dress and act. As much as they may all huddle together based around what the common trend is about, they all have their own individual tastes in material and in people. One girl that I liked back in the day loved Hong Kong pop stars and Hello Kitty, and guys that resemble Hong Kong pop stars - tall and skinny, gross really. Another girl preferred artsy guys who can hack together a 'masterpiece'

 get to know girls as friends, and then see what kinda girls you like, just because your a geek doesnt mean that girls dont like you because they probarbly do they just dont like admitting their feelings...

dont make the mistake that almost all men make thinking that just because they are not very good looking or they dont have money that they do not deserve a girlfriend of quality.
Focus on taking care of your insecurities and things that stop you from being comfortable in social situations and that will surely make a difference.
PS: get more female friends and learn to be comfortable around women.
