A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (31 August 2006):

DrPsych agony auntYou are suffering from clinical depression as depression underpins most eating disorders. You are beginning to recognise that your behaviour is not 'normal' which is a big first step. I had the same problem at your age - no breakfast, no lunch and too much exercise. You end up with malnutrition, metabolic disorders, gum disease and you become just miserable. You should never weigh more than once per week - your weight will go up and down with fluid retention etc. By all means do some exercise but you cannot do that and not eat - you will pass out, I did at your age as I had bulmia nervosa. I got very ill as a result of this kind of 'lifestyle' and I am now on metabolic tablets for life which is not fun. At 20 my figure was very important to me but it wasnt until a good few years later when I trained as a clinical psychologist and reflected on myself that I knew it all boiled down to basic unhappiness and a lot of depression at that time. You can get really obsessive about these things so it is time to take back some control in your life and recognise you have a treatable problem.

Youre certainly not over weight. If you continue with these typeso f eating habits you may quickly find that your very underweight which will then lead to malnutrition and cause you other types of problems bad skin, hair and bad breath! Seriously this is what happens if you dont maintain a healthy diet. Your body needs certain amounts of calories fat salt etc a day to function correctly and healthily. From the sounds of it this has become an obsession, you obviously realise its not right which is good - acknowledging the problem is very important. Id suggest you speak to your doctor who will be able to discuss it with you in confidence un-judgementally and best advise you on how to cope with the situation. x

A female reader, bonym United Kingdom +, writes (30 August 2006):

bonym agony auntYour weight sounds normal to me, but missing breakfast is not a wise idea. Breakfast kickstarts your metabolism and by missing breakfast you are slowing your metabolic rate down therfore increasing the likelihood of putting on weight. Mydear, what you need to do is maintain a sensible balanced diet, have 3 square meals per day, if you want to snack, thats fine, try to eat healthier snacks but there is no harm in treating yourself to some icecream and chocolate every now aagain!

Think of the human body, in school we were taught that the human body is made up of billions of cells, the outer layer of the cell is a cell membrane, we need to eat fat to make cell membranes so if you dont eat some fatty foods, then thats a good choice either because you will waste away as it were.

You need to eat regualry, sensibly and propotionately, dont skip meals, its not a good idea.

Take care. xXx

A male reader, Yos Netherlands +, writes (30 August 2006):

Yos agony auntFor your height and age, your weight is normal. If anything it is a little below, you are certainly not overweight.

It sounds like you have serious issues with eating. You don't sound too thin right now, but if you keep up your behaviour you could end up causing your body a lot of damage. This kind of behaviour can be caused by other problems and issues, it quite possibly has nothing to do with food and eating at all.

I suggest you see a councillor or therapist. Eating problems are quite common, and a good therapist will be able to help.
