"broad" is an old and quite antiquated and more-than-tinged with disrespect term used to refer to and demean a woman. Usually, men of another era used it to refer to women in general. It was like referring to women as "dames" or "skirts". Sorta like "chicks", is used now. It's not polite nor nice, but that's all it really means. It has nothing to do with weight or size. My father used to say about female drivers: "That dumb broad doesn't know where her turn signals are" or it could be used like "Gee, she's a fat broad, isn't she?" It's rather strange to hear that it's being used by people in your age bracket, I think.
